How can man create global warming?

How can we destroy something - that we do not know how it was created? I remember growing up in the 80's being pumped full of the ideology of how we are destroying the ozone and to go out side we would have to put on special suits. Before my time scientist were calling for the next ice age. So does chicken little still live in all of us?
